Trauma

Trauma is defined as someone being subject to lasting shock as a result of an emotionally disturbing experience or physical injury.

mental health in the black community

Black people in America, no matter if they’re from out west in South Central LA, down south in Atlanta or up north in Newark or the Bronx — in some form or fashion they have consciously or subconsciously been exposed to some form of trauma.

The trauma Black people experience daily is mainly derived from the poor social conditions they are raised in from birth and throughout their adolescence. Oftentimes the high frequency and degree of these negative experiences stemming from poverty and a life of deprivation, places one in an estranged reality of normalcy without any type of healing.

Consequently, the repeat of these deeply distressing events causes a person to mentally suffer and ultimately harms their overall well-being.
